Too cheap for a paid account...
So, I can't do a poll. Instead, I'm going to go straight out and ask YOU.

How much time do you spend using a personal computer, and how much does it cost you in terms of time/money/etc? What about others you know?

How much time did it take you to learn how to operate it in order to get the benefits from it?

What would you say are the benefits and drawbacks of personal computers?

Are there activities that you use a computer "instead of" doing (eg. sporting, reading, going to movies, interacting with people, watching TV, etc.)?

Are you socially more active in the virtual or the real world?

Do you think your time spent on computer use is well spent?

I'd really appreciate any answers. Part of the reason why I'm doing this is for a uni assignment, and it would help. :)

My answers:

1. I spend too much time on the computer, but it costs me very little money as I'm utterly spoiled by my parents.

2. It doesn't take me long to learn how to use most applications, but I've been exposed to computers since before I can remember.

3. The drawback is probably the distraction, for me, because I surf the Net and find all these interesting sites and smart people and I go and read them instead of working on stuff that'll make me look smart too. The benefits include word processing, Excel, Powerpoint, and the ability to visit all those interesting sites.

4. Yes. It'd probably be novel-reading for me.

5. Virtual.

6. No, but it's usually fun.

How much time do you spend using a personal computer, and how much does it cost you in terms of time/money/etc? What about others you know?

A. I spend Well Over four hours day/night. Doesn't cost me much. Unles I DO buy this video card, wireless card, and so on. Have a few hundred dollars' worth of Sim expansion packs, too.

How much time did it take you to learn how to operate it in order to get the benefits from it?

A. Umm. Well, I find it fairly easy to learn now. Got our first computer when I was ten, and it took the entire family six monts to open the Aladdin game on it. Let's ignore that fact that I (we) only beat the game last year, shall we?

What would you say are the benefits and drawbacks of personal computers?

A. Benefits: 'Net, you guys, writing, study, google, finding out about EVP, other languages, and other fun stuff. Online books, to. Drawbacks: Worried Parents and abusive sisters, and yes, distraction. That's about it.

Are there activities that you use a computer "instead of" doing (eg. sporting, reading, going to movies, interacting with people, watching TV, etc.)?

A. I'd rather be online of a night than watching TV. I don't do sports. Read a lot online, now that I'm out of books at home.

Are you socially more active in the virtual or the real world?

A. Yes. (Hate to break it to you, Sarah, but you're kinda my best friend. *Blushes*)

Do you think your time spent on computer use is well spent?

A. Yes, I do. My English (huggles, Sarah), writing, knowledge in general, and IT ability have all improved. Tip of the iceberg, there.

Q:How much time do you spend using a personal computer, and how much does it cost you in terms of time/money/etc? What about others you know?

A: I'm on the computer whenever I'm not watching TV or sleeping o_O, or out of the house. I run out the room everytime the internet bill comes because I know I'm going to get busted -_-

Q:How much time did it take you to learn how to operate it in order to get the benefits from it?

A:I'm not entirely sure how long it took me, but I've been on the internet "obbessively" since the beginning of highschool and before that I would spend hours playing the Sims.

Q:What would you say are the benefits and drawbacks of personal computers?

A:Computers are useful for homework and communication purposes. The reason I like the computer is because you can find people of almost any interest and get in touch with them, so one feels less isolated.

Q:Are there activities that you use a computer "instead of" doing (eg. sporting, reading, going to movies, interacting with people, watching TV, etc.)?

A: Er...watching TV, reading, movies occasionally, walking to the shops every now and then.

Q:Are you socially more active in the virtual or the real world?

A:Virtual by far.

Q:Do you think your time spent on computer use is well spent?

A:...it's fun. Unfortunately most of the time I'm meant to be spending on the computer doing homework I'm really reading fanfics or am on the msn.

1. I spend a few hours a day on the computer. I spend a lot of time on the Internet, so that costs me!

2. Not too long. I learn fairly quickly!

3. Well, it's good to have access to the Internet and be able to type things up. Computers can cost a lot of money if they need fixing, though.

4. Not really. I use it for reading, but only because I can't read normal stuff. I still go to the movies and stuff.

5. Virtual.

6. Yes.

How much time do you spend using a personal computer, and how much does it cost you in terms of time/money/etc? What about others you know?:

Probably about four to six hours, depending on what exactly i need to do on it. We have a fixed rate, being on ADSL, but I honestly couldn't tell you the amount. Sixty something dollars a month, I think.
The only other person I know has limited time and would spend only up to three hours, but I have no idea what she pays.

How much time did it take you to learn how to operate it in order to get the benefits from it?

The very most, a week, I learn quickly when it comes to things I want.

What would you say are the benefits and drawbacks of personal computers?

My artwork is the biggest benifit. I have acess to free gallerys to post and publicise my art, which I would have had NO chance of without. I use it to document and sort my art, so i can keep tabs of what I've drawn and why, without having to keep a very strict regime on my folders and files. Problem is that others have just as much acess and many free gallery's are swamped with inferior art that often turns people away.
I also use it as a form of communication worldwide, making lots of friends overseas and penpals. Also met a lot of rather scary and sad individuals too.
The biggest drawback of all is acessability. Too many things are simply too easy to acess with a computer- illegal sites flourish and there is little to no actual policing of the system.

Are there activities that you use a computer "instead of" doing (eg. sporting, reading, going to movies, interacting with people, watching TV, etc.)?

Reading and drawing, but on the flipside, I read stories on the computer and draw ont he paint programs. Sleeping, I think is the main thing it cuts into for me.

Are you socially more active in the virtual or the real world?

Virtual, no doubt, I'm actually rather shy in person, but that's no reflection on using a computer, i always have been, but over the net I'm rather opinionated and talk far too much, saying many things i just wouldn't have the guts to in person.

Do you think your time spent on computer use is well spent?

Usually. I spend a great deal of time tending to my galleries.

Um. Soooo long. I may answer, but it would take so much time to estimate answers. Plus a lot of them are "that depends" or "sometimes".

1, I spend a lot of time on the computer, but it costs little money as I mostly do so at school.
2, I learned how to use my computer pretty quickly as I’m pretty good at working out technology.
3,
Benefits:
Access to information at just about any time, useful for school and other curiosities.
Useful for making contact with people who have similar interests as me regardless of where they are in the world (even Australia )
Generally entertaining
Drawbacks:
Exposure to viruses and other Internet problems are fairly common
In the end, SOMEONE has to pay for all this info
I keep getting DISTRACTED from the work I’m meant to be doing when I find other interesting stuff to do.
4, I use the net way too much but I still find time for everything else I have (or want) to do.
5, Virtual
6, Well… sometimes. Mostly It’s just fun.

How much time do you spend using a personal computer, and how much does it cost you in terms of time/money/etc? What about others you know?

I usually spend 1 to 4 hours a day online, though I have been known to spend up to 15 hours online, or be offline for weeks on end for no good reason. It dosen't cost me much as this is a shared computer and my mother pays most of its bills, though myself and my brothers do pay out for replacement parts and upgrades when they are needed.

Most people I know pay a good £25 a month for their net connection, then up to £1000 a month for parts (though I have to say that dosen't happen often! Its usually a case of 'If its needed, or better, I'll get it'.)

How much time did it take you to learn how to operate it in order to get the benefits from it?

Not long. It took me all of 3 weeks (from knowing nothing about PCs) to be able to dismantle it and put it back togehter, and I picked up all the apps within a few days of getting tem.

What would you say are the benefits and drawbacks of personal computers?

Benifits: They're personal, you have access to information whenever you want it, if you use a decent firewall/virus protection they're pretty safe these days.

Drawbacks: The cost if you want anything half decent, the distraction of MSN messenger and LJ.com ;), the fact that anyone (including some very dangerous people) can communicate with you.

Are there activities that you use a computer "instead of" doing (eg. sporting, reading, going to movies, interacting with people, watching TV, etc.)?

Um, how about everything? Nah, I am pretty balanced in my net useage, though I have been known to skip the odd night out to be online for some events.

Are you socially more active in the virtual or the real world?

Probably the virtual world, but thats because there are so many wonderful people out there!

Do you think your time spent on computer use is well spent?

Probably not, I spend far too much time readong FanFic, chatting and updating LJ.

xx
Feef
